At the turn of the 20th century, Francis Draper Jr. (b. 1861-1935) was a member of the Boston Art Club, a prestigious exhibition space founded in 1854. The club was conceived in order to promote the art of American artists and American scenery at a time when European art dominated the art world.
Francis Draper Jr. was one of the most exhibited members at the Boston Art Club beginning in 1880, until he left for Santa Barbara in 1914. Many of Draper's works painted in Santa Barbara were created en plein air. What's more, the majority are painted on the back of grocery store cardboard boxes. They are beautiful images with delicate, meticulous brushwork and a lovely use of color. Forsyth is pleased to offer an extensive collection of Draper's California plein air work.
