About the Artist |

Florence Biddle ver Steeg was a St. Louis painter best known for her expressive floral still lifes. Born in St. Louis, she studied at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts and began exhibiting with the St. Louis Artists’ Guild in 1915, later becoming a member of the influential “Eight Women Painters.” Originally trained as a miniaturist, ver Steeg developed a looser, more modern approach to painting, earning particular praise for her sophisticated use of color. She exhibited widely throughout her career and was awarded the All-Illinois Society of the Fine Arts Gold Star Award in 1935 for her painting Ancestral Chair
