Straw Marquetry Cocktail Table, 3 Available

Handmade in Saint Louis by craftsman Cathy Meyer, these tables celebrate the centuries-old art of straw marquetry, a technique introduced to Europe from the Far East in the 17th century and revived during the Art Deco era by designers such as Jean-Michel Frank. The rye straw is grown and dyed in France, then individually split, flattened, burnished, and meticulously cut by hand to create each pattern. The tables pair this traditional craft with locally sourced lumber salvaged from urban trees.

Two tables are available. The light blue and whisper green straw with naturally spalted maple legs has sold (shown in the middle). The remaining tables available are the whisper green straw with bleached walnut legs finished in subtle driftwood tones; and antique gold straw with walnut legs stained with a water-based aniline dye. Each set of legs is lacquered for a refined finish, and every table is topped with a small glass surface—a thoughtful combination of historic technique, local materials, and contemporary craftsmanship.
